Project Summary
OVERVIEW
The grounds of the former State of North Carolina Cherry Hospital in Wayne County, NC consist of approximately 625 acres. A substantial amount of the project area is in a floodplain and has been impacted by Hurricanes Fran, Floyd, Mathew, Florence, and other storms.
The NC Department of Health and Human Services has recently closed most of the facilities at the former Cherry Hospital and built a new psychiatric hospital across the Little River. The State Property Office is evaluating the potential sale of the property. The research and recommendations generated through this effort will be used to inform future land use decisions related to this site.
This project is currently underway; updates will be provided upon completion.
